A CRY FOR HELP: Young Filipinos are in the Midst of a Mental Health Crisis
Experts say the
number of suicide cases and young people with mental illnesses in the
Philippines has risen drastically in the last two years with at least three
suicide referral made each day.
Among 8,761 students
from Grades 7-10 in the Philippines, 11.6% among 13 to 17 year olds considered
suicide and 16.8% among 13 to 17 year olds attempted suicide. Latest available
data recorded by the WHO, reported over 2,000 cases of suicide from 2000 to
2012 with majority of individuals dying by suicide also aged between 15 to 29
years old (World Health Organization, 2015).
“With all the social
media, there’s just too many things to do; too many things to prove….Young
people today tend to be very pressured, very stressed, live very complicated
lives, and tend to be socially disconnected,” Dr. Chua of PGH said.
